2006 Home Dedications

On July 9 we dedicated The Mathis Family (Jimmie, Angela, J.D. & Eddie) home on Spring Street in Canton.  The home was graciously sponsored by Coldwell Banker Kasey & Associates as part of the Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation “100 Homes by Our 100th Anniversary” campaign.  Along with Habitat volunteers and the family, Coldwell Banker associates from the six area offices came together to construct the three-bedroom home.  J.D. and Eddie said the best thing about their new home is no longer having to share a bedroom.  They now have plenty of room to study and play.  Best wishes to the Mathis family!

On July 30 we dedicated The Earley Family (Steven & Renea) home on Mitchell Street in Canton.  Numerous family members, friends, and Habitat volunteers were on hand to celebrate this joyous occasion.  Steven and Renea gave praise and thanks to all who helped their dream come true.  We wish The Earleys many happy years in their new home!

A Day of Unity

On August 23, 2006 United Way of Haywood County mobilized a team of volunteers for their United Way Day of Caring. Approximately twenty-five people from KARE and the Kiwanis Club of Waynesville joined Haywood Habitat volunteers and board members at the construction site on Meadow Street in Waynesville. A big thank you to everyone who helped make the day successful and fun!  Volunteering together builds stronger communities!

"Faithworks" Works!

A Habitat home in Waynesville has been completed thanks to the sponsorship of a coalition of local churches forming the Meadow Street “Faithworks” project. The coalition goal was to raise $25,000 with the Duke Endowment agreeing to match the first $10,000.  Through several fundraisers, including the “Dine Out for Habitat” event in May that raised over $5,000, the work of many has helped the churches exceed their goal!  A Service of Celebration was held at Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church in July to recognize the collaborative efforts of building a home for Kathleen Smith and her daughters, Ashley and Karla.

In addition to Long’s Chapel, other area churches participating in the “Faithworks” project were Crabtree UMC, Clyde Central UMC, Elizabeth Chapel UMC, Faith UMC, Fincher’s Chapel UMC, Francis Cove UMC, Latino Community Center, Mount Zion UMC, and The Vine of the Mountains.  The dedication of The Smith Family home was held on October 15, 2006.  Representatives of the ten churches were on hand to share in the creative ways their church raised money and physically supported the coalition.  Particularly heartwarming were the efforts of the children in collecting “Found Money” (from sidewalks, underneath couch cushions, in  washing machines, etc.) and making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to feed the work site volunteers!

Golfers Help Habitat

The Laurel Ridge Ladies Golf Association raised more than $4,100 for Haywood Habitat at their charity golf tournament held at the Laurel Ridge Country Club in June.  Thank you to all the participants who made this a successful event!

Happy Anniversary Habitat!

Habitat for Humanity International celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala at the National Leadership Conference held in Charlotte in early August 2006.  Since its founding in 1976 in Americus, GA by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat has built more than 200,000 houses, sheltering more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

Partner Families to Receive Quilts

The Daughters of Dorcas, a group of ladies named after the Biblical Dorcas,  make quilts, lap robes, turbans and a variety of other fabricated items for charities, nursing homes, disaster relief, and cancer patients. They have partnered with Haywood Habitat to provide a nice, warm quilt for each new home. Thank you to the ladies for sharing their time and their talents in providing our partner families with such a heartfelt gift that will certainly become a treasured heirloom.
